Paths of the Alta Rocca


The paths of the Alta Rocca is a distinct favourite, allowing you to enjoy all the contrasts and colours of the island. Starting from the gulf of Porto Vecchio on the east coast, the trail rises up through the mountains of the Alta Rocca before arriving in the hill top town of Levie.


This holiday would appeal to anyone that is used to walking regularly and is in good shape. With five days of moderate walking, you will discover the extreme south and all its treasures.


Level of Difficulty: The walks are on good footpaths and trails, the terrain is often rocky and rarely flat. You need to be used to walking all day and take regular exercise to enjoy this holiday. There are many uphill and downhill sections. We describe this walk as moderate with strenuous sections and encourage walkers to use two walking poles.

Itinerary


Day 1: Arrival day

Arrive into Porto Vecchio, with time to settle into your central hotel before exploring. Porto Vecchio is the third largest town on Corsica, the beaches are some of the best in the Mediterranean. The ambiance is chic and distinctly Mediterranean and you will love the contrasts of this town. It is great to just sit in one of the cafés in the citadel or the harbour, and soak up the atmosphere. Visit the tourist shops, or simply just relax on the beach.


Day 2: Alzu - Ospedale (15km / 9 miles)

We transfer you up to the trailhead in the Ospedale forest where a steady climb takes you to the village of Ospedale, high above the coast. Ospedale is a hamlet on the edge of the forest, deriving its name from 'hospitum' due to Porto Vecchio's malaria victims taking refuge here in the hot summer months during the 18th century. The village has superb balcony views from its elevated postion back across the gulf of Porto Vecchio are breathtaking. The Mediterranean vegetation is fragrant, a scrubby mix of heather bushes, strawberry trees and wild herbs.

Day 3: Ospedale - Levie (15km / 9 miles)

The path leads swiftly up away from to the hamlet of Cartalavonu, then onto the high mountain pass of Foce Alta (1,171m). From there you will catch magnificent views over the Lake of Ospedale. A multitude of sleepy perched villages of Alta Rocca and the famous pink granite pinnacles of Bavella are stretched out before you. The trail winds its way through a chestnut forest, the village of Carbini (famous for its 11th century church decorated with Pisan art) and the Fiumiccicoli river. Passing through olive groves and its old mill, you arrive at the outskirts of Levie, a taxi takes you to Zonza for the night.

Day 4: Zonza - Aullene (12km / 7 miles)

The trail leads out of the village, you arrive at the Quenza deer enclosure and shortly afterwards, the village itself. Be sure to go and see the Pisan church that dates from the year 1000AD. You pass the hamlet of Ghjallicu an old chestnut mill and the shepherd's cabin Lavu Donacu, at the edge of the Coscione plateau before reaching the Bocca d'Arria Perroza.

Day 5: Aullene- Sainte Lucie de Tallano (10km / 6 miles)

From Aullene you arrive at the panoramic Cuircupula bronze ages site and down to the village of Serra di Scopamene. As the path snakes through a chestnuts forest, you will notice an old mill that has been restored by the Corsican Natural Park. You will pass the River Rizzanese, the Col de Tavara, the village of Altagène, then through the hamlet of Saint Andrea di Talla before arriving at today’s destination: Santa Lucia de Tallano. This village is really invinting and full of interests. Such as a 15th century convent, tall granite houses, a restored olive mill and the possibility to purchase a wide variety of oils.

Day 6: Sainte Lucie de Tallano - Propriano (12km / 7.5 miles)

Passing the 12th century Roman chapel St-Jean-Baptiste, the path crosses the River Rizzanese. The following stop on our itinerary is Loreto di Tallano. This village was the setting of a famous novel written by Prosper Mérimée, the legendary Colomba, based on a true vendetta story. Impatience will mount as you get closer to the beckoning Mediterranean sea. You make your way towards the thermal spa of Baracci; the benefits of its waters have been known since antiquity. A great spot to have a soak and relax. At the end of today’s walk a short transfer is scheduled at 3 pm from Fozzano to Propriano, a coastal resort buzzing with atmosphere, street cafes and plenty of fish restaurants.

FAQ Walking

Walking is environmentally friendly, good for fitness and enables you to get a real taste and feel of the island, meet the local people, stay in family run accommodation and get off the beaten track and experience the real Corsica...



1. Will I have a guide to assist me?

Not on the self-guided tours however they will only be a phone call away.


2. What happens if I get tired along the way?

On self-guided tours it's best to stop and take a rest but remember to always drink plenty of water.


3. What happens to my baggage?

Your baggage travels on the van, under the care of the guides. You will usually find your things waiting for you in your room at the hotel.


4. Do I need to train before the walk?

To get the most out of your holiday, all we suggest you do is get in some training, preferably a couple of weeks before the start of your holiday.


5. How far must I walk each day?

On average its 14.6 km a day which is about 9 miles per day


6. How do I get to the starting point of my tour?

Starting and finishing points of our tours have been planned so that they are close to the islands


7. I'm travelling alone - do I have to pay a single supplement?

For safety reasons we do not accept single person reservations. The prices quoted for our tours refer to accommodation in double rooms based on 2 sharing with bed and breakfast however a single room supplement is available. 


8. What should I bring with me?

We suggest that you bring your normal clothes that you would wear when walking in the UK, i.e. walking shorts, and tops, hiking boots/shoes plus your normal holiday luggage. Listed below are other items that we recommend:
